Armadillos can be quite a nuisance and they can actually end up ruining your flower garden. Therefore it is best to know what to do so as to prevent this from happening, especially after all the hard work gardening involves!
Since armadillos have a tendency of digging and burrowing large dens underground, they will eventually weaken the ground and remove most of the soil beneath the flowers. Therefore the first step is to make sure to build a fence around the flower beds in your garden as this will greatly reduce the probability that armadillos dig beneath them. Just use a shovel to dig a trench around the flower beds. Make sure it is at least six inches deep. A wire mesh, a staple gun and some wood stakes are all you need to build the fence. Simply staple the wire mesh to the stakes’ upper part, and then hammer the stakes into the soil. Refill the trench with dirt and soil. You need to ensure that there is a significant part of the fence buried in the ground if you want the fence to be effective against armadillos. The buried part of the fence will prevent the armadillos from starting to dig under the fence.
It is also a good idea to use some methods which can repel armadillos. One of the simplest and most effective methods is to plant garlic plants. The smell of garlic can help to deter armadillos from your garden. Thus, it is a good idea to plant garlic plants along the perimeter or outer boundaries of your garden.
You can also place some moth balls around the garden’s perimeter. Ammonia powder is also known to be quite effective. If you have noticed specific areas where the armadillos have started to dig, try sprinkling dried cayenne pepper in those areas and around them. The smell of cayenne pepper is rather spicy and it can help to repel armadillos from doing further damage.
There are also specific deterrent products that you can find on the market. These need to be re-applied in problem areas every now and then.
The final way to get rid or armadillos is to set traps. You can find armadillo traps from hardware and home improvement stores. Earthworms can be used as bait. Traps are usually quite effective if placed in strategic places. However make sure to avoid harming the armadillos that get trapped. Just relocate them as far away from your home as possible, but never kill them. Also, bear in mind that trapping is prohibited in some areas. Thus, it should only be used as a last resort, as some of the above mentioned tricks can be enough to keep armadillos away from your garden.
